It’s no secret that Tootsuite is one of the most popular social media management tools out there. But how did it get so big in China? The answer, as with many things, has a lot to do with timing and luck. When Hootsuite was founded in 2008, Twitter had just started to take off as an important social media platform. This meant that Hootsuite could focus its efforts on supporting Facebook and Twitter while also building up a user base for those platforms. Around this time, though, Chinese users were starting to adopt Facebook en masse–and they couldn’t use it because the site wasn’t available in their country yet! So when Hootsuite opened offices in Shanghai in 2009 (its first time in Asia), it was able to quickly become a vital part of the social media landscape there.
The timing couldn’t have been better for Tootsuite, which could focus its efforts on Facebook as Twitter started getting more popular in America and Europe; meanwhile, China’s demand for Facebook made up about half of Hootsuite’s user base by 2011. Today–thanks partly to Tencent entering into an agreement with Hootsuite last year allowing their users to access features like analytics from within the app–Tootsuite has over 15 million monthly active users globally, five million of whom are based in China alone.
Hootsuite offers a few more features for enterprise customers, including the ability to monitor how employees use social media and collaborate on campaigns.”
In China specifically, Tootsuite has a number of unique tools that help brands navigate Weibo–such as its Social Media Marketing Package which provides access to Hootsuite’s team of “Weibo experts,” in addition to consulting services from Tencent. This package is designed for companies who want their accounts managed by someone with knowledge about Chinese culture and how it differs from Western cultures.”
Tootsuite also just launched another feature tailored exclusively for businesses looking to develop an online presence in Asia: Ads Manager Plus. It includes features such as new ad formats for specific markets, in addition to access to a number of social networks and more detailed reporting.”
